LA: In Dialogue Opening Reception

  • Band of Vices Art Gallery 5351 West Adams Boulevard Los Angeles, CA, 90016 United States (map)

Join us in celebrating an exhibition of community photography from across Los Angeles County!

Enjoy the LA: In Dialogue opening reception on Saturday, June 3rd from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at Band of Vices art gallery in West Adams.

For this exciting project, the Getty Museum partnered with four local nonprofits to teach multigenerational artists photography inspired by Getty’s current exhibition, Dawoud Bey and Carrie Mae Weems: In Dialogue. Over several months the Black Image Center (Culver City), Inner-City Arts (Downtown), LA Commons (Leimert Park & South LA), and Venice Arts (Venice Beach) worked closely with over sixty artists to create the resulting works on view.  These photographers have come together from different neighborhoods, diverse backgrounds, and at various levels of their artistic experience to present meaningful work that speaks to and of their communities. Following in the footsteps of Dawoud Bey and Carrie Mae Weems, this creative collaboration has inspired a new generation of socially-committed artists.

The exhibition will also include works by the Getty Unshuttered program, a cohort of teen photographers from across the city who are collectively exploring the theme of Taking a Moment. The Unshuttered photographers are guided in their work by teaching photographers, through exploring the Getty collection, and growing as they inspire each other.

LA: In Dialogue is on view June 3 - 17, 2023.

LA: In Dialogue was conceived by the Getty Museum, produced by The Culture List Inc., and curated by Terrell Tilford at Band of Vices. This project was championed by the many teaching artists and administrators at Black Image Center, LA Commons, Venice Arts, and Inner-City Arts. This project was made possible with major support from Jordan Schnitzer and The Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation, generous support from Megan and Peter Chernin, and additional support from Jan and Trish de Bont. Getty Unshuttered is generously funded by the Genesis Inspiration Foundation.
