LEARN MORE ABOUT MAYRA:
Mayra was a participant in Venice Arts’ Girls' Project, a national documentary photography project conducted in 1998–2000. Then a student at Venice High School and a resident of South Los Angeles, Mayra was 16 years–old when she created this self–portrait. Prior to her involvement at Venice Arts, Mayra said that she imagined a life for herself of poverty and challenge. At Venice Arts, she discovered that she was a talented artist and, through the extremely strong relationship that she developed with her mentor, Josie Zamudio, she started to see other options for her future. She remained in Venice Arts' programs until she graduated from high school. In the summer following her first year of college, where she was studying photography, she worked as a paid summer Art Intern at Venice Arts. She completed her Masters of Photography in San Francisco and is currently working as a photographer.
