First Vote Exhibition & Screening
Please join us in celebrating our student’s thought-provoking work from First Vote, a series of youth-produced short films, still images and comics using the vehicle of storytelling to explore issues of importance to young people as they ready themselves to cast their first ballot in 2020.
2019 Student Culminating Exhibition
This fun community celebration showcases the best of our students' films, photographs, comics, animations, and mixed- and multi-media pieces from our award-winning Art Mentoring workshops. Join us for a family potluck, exhibition, and film screening.
OPENING RECEPTION: Dotan Saguy: Venice Beach, The Last Days of a Bohemian Paradise
Join us for the premiere of photographer Dotan Saguy’s stunning photo documentary about the extraordinary but endangered culture of Venice Beach. His meticulously composed, compassionate photographs unabashedly praise the rarity of the unique individuals who populate the sands of Venice. Unfortunately, Venice Beach sits on the edge of a knife, as the forces of gentrification and corporate expansion threaten to squash the way of life that has defined Venice for decades. Allow yourself to be mesmerized—as Dotan Saguy has been—by this way of life, before it fades away.
OPENING RECEPTION + FILM SCREENING: 2018 Student Culminating Show
This fun community celebration showcases the best of our students' films, photographs, comics, animations, and mixed- and multi-media pieces from our award-winning Art Mentoring workshops. Join us for a family potluck, exhibition, and film screening.
OPENING RECEPTION: The Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards and MOPLA Photo Book Exhibition
Initiated in November 2012 by Aperture Foundation and Paris Photo, the Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards celebrate the photobook’s contribution to the evolving narrative of photography. Also on view will be the MOPLA Photo Book Exhibition, a juried, submission-based exhibition featuring both independently and commercially published books by emerging and established photographers around the world.
Presented in collaboration with Month of Photography Los Angeles.
OPENING RECEPTION: Ruth Chase: West of Lincoln
Painter Ruth Chase’s first solo exhibition, The West of Lincoln Project, traces the history of Venice through the life stories of people who grew up here, as told through large-scale paintings and audio interviews by Chase, and accompanying biographical texts written by Gena Lasko. The exhibition is a chance for Venetians—both longtime residents and newcomers— to reflect on the history of our unique community as told through personal stories.
OPENING RECEPTION: Marian Crostic: Salt | Air
Venice Arts presents a solo exhibition by Venice-based photographer Marian Crostic. The exhibition showcases three recent bodies of work from the artist’s Salt | Air series: Sea Change, Sandscapes, and Salt | Air. Each of these focuses on a different aspect of Venice Beach, documented during Crostic’s morning walks. Ethereal and tenuous, these images reveal an abstracted, introspective view of the beach and ocean environment.
